A Mother's Son

This is gonna be a slightly weird post but I just need to write about this because I'm really this lame ;)

So there was this drama play thing on ITV last Monday and honestly it was so darn good. Now I'm not great at writing, I'm barley coherent in real life, let alone when trying to explain something through words! But I will try because it was just that good. It was one of those programmes, that just like with a good book or film, I got completely sucked into. I couldn't not write about it! I also feel like when I've written about it won't feel the need to keep rambling onto other people about how awesome it was ;)

It was a sort of murder mystery. Basically it was about this woman who thought her son had murdered someone (told you I'm not good at explaining things ha.) It starts off with everyone finding out about the murder and because of various reasons and plot twists, the mother believes its her son. The home they live in is really messed up because the Mum lives with her new husband and his two kids along with her two kids from a previous marriage. From the start there is rift between Rosie (the Mother) and her new husband, they're trying to all live in this house happily together but can't because of their children. A lot of it was about relationships, not just between Rosie and Ben (new husband) but between Rosie's children and Ben too. It sort of questions how far he would go for children who aren't actually his. Rosie and Jamie's (Rosie's son/ the murderer) Dad are adamant that even if Jamie had killed the girl they would never go to the police. While Ben thinks of the risk to his own children and says that they must go; the whole thing is shot incredibly well and because it was over two episodes it completely kept you guessing. You don't know that it's actually Jamie until one of the final scenes.

The last two scenes are, for me, what made all of it so good. Although Jamie did kill this girl and as you're watching it you feel incredibly sorry for her and her family, you also feel incredibly sorry for Jamie too. What was so good about it I think is that it was from the perspective of this mother. It wasn't what you would think a murder mystery would be about, from the perspective of the police or the family of the murdered girl, it was from the mother of this boy who had done this completely terrible thing but still had the forgiveness of his Mum and Dad. Seriously its making me cry just writing about this, the final scenes were so heart breaking, it just ending on Rosie and Jamie standing outside the police station and Rosie putting her hand out for him and them walking in together. There was no big ending where the police get him, nothing at all melodramatic, it was just it. He'd killed someone and his parents needed to be there for him because how couldn't they be?

It was acted so well too. Again there was nothing melodramatic about it also because of the acting. The guy who played Jamie was completely dry all the way through so you didn't really ever know if he'd done it or not until he admits at the end. And the actors playing the Mum and Dad were just incredible, they both portrayed their characters so well, just being completely helpless but at the same time wanted to know what drove their son to do it.

Sorry that I've just rambled on and on, as you can tell I really like drama! I love the way that just by a few hours of television you can get so attached to one family and some characters and one story. And people can interpret it in some many different ways, not just 'A Mother's Son' but just any programme on the telly, or any play or book or film or whatever, its kinda like art and can mean different things to different people. Like this one programme has been absolutely amazing to me but another person could find it completely crap!

Maybe all of this is just me being weird and normal people don't get this bothered about some ITV drama. So yeah, sorry for that but I just couldn't stop thinking about it and wanted to write it down in a few words...or a few paragraphs...

I advise anyone who hasn't seen it to go YouTube it! You won't regret it ;)

Anyway jeez this has been long and slightly strange. I won't post for like a week to make up for all of this.
GOODBYE. xxxxxx

  1. This was actually quite a good review (sort of) ;) To begin with I thought it was gonna be a big rambley 'Anna' explanation but you did actually get to the point! Although you did spoil it by revealing the whole point of the programme , I was quite interested in watching until then, but what's the point now? ;)
